IAPP Europe Data Protection Congress 15-16 November 2023

Exciting day at the IAPP Europe Data Protection Congress 2023 in Brussels!

🌐 Today, EDPO had the privilege of joining over 3000 attendees in a dynamic and packed venue, discussing the latest in data protection and privacy.

👗 A highlight of the day was Rachele Didero’s presentation, addressing concerns about facial recognition technologies. She proposed a unique solution involving AI-generated patterns in clothing to thwart facial recognition by confusing the technology.

🔍 Insights were shared on the pivotal role of privacy professionals, acknowledged as essential contributors in understanding data intricacies. Their adeptness in conducting risk assessments, adaptable for AI risk assessments, showcased their indispensable expertise.

🤝 Additionally, the importance of governance frameworks for privacy, crafted by these professionals, was highlighted—underscoring their role as the “glue” bringing together diverse stakeholders crucial for effective AI governance.

🗓️ Marking a significant date in our calendars, the upcoming trilogue on December 6th holds hope for the closure of the AI Act. Noteworthy clusters in focus include law enforcement uses of AI technologies, foundation models, and questions surrounding enforcement and governance.

🌐 The event also provided insight into the new EU-US Data Privacy Framework (DPF), with a current focus on implementation. The first evaluation is set for July 2024. Over 2500 companies have signed up —70% of which are SMEs. The panelists expressed confidence that there are strong arguments to defend the DPF should it be challenged before the courts.

Kudos to the IAPP for fostering discussions that drive innovation and progress in the ever-evolving landscape of data protection! 🚀
