EDPS 20th Birthday Summit
🎉 The EDPS 20th Birthday Summit centred around five key questions:
🔍 The first question explored the foundations of data protection, delving into what it protects beyond privacy. Discussions highlighted the power dynamics involved and the necessity of external supervision in data processing.
🏛️ The second session focused on the objective of data protection as a fundamental right. It emphasised trust, continuous risk assessment, and the importance of effective corrective measures, underscoring GDPR’s role as a central regulatory pillar.
⚖️ The third discussion examined the relationship between data protection and the state, addressing how to balance national security with data protection. The session stressed that these two aspects are not incompatible.
🚀 The fourth session addressed the reactiveness of data protection, questioning whether data protection can take a proactive role and be in the driver’s seat. It emphasised the need for continuous adaptation and enforcement.
🌟 Finally, the fifth session considered the future of data protection, exploring how to turn aspirations into actionable proposals. This included reflections on the evolving regulatory landscape and the potential role of Data Protection Authorities in regulating AI.
