IAPP Data Protection Intensive UK 29 February 2024

🔍 Reflecting on the IAPP’ Data Protection Intensive: UK 2024 DPI24

🎉 EDPO is thrilled to have taken part in the IAPP UK Data Protection Intensive conference in London over the past two days, where we did a deep dive into the evolving landscape of data protection.

👧 Central themes throughout the two days included the safety of children online, multi-jurisdictional perspectives on DSARs, enforcement of Data Subject Rights, the intricacies of the EU Data Act, EU-US data transfers and their implications for the UK post-Brexit.

📜 ICO Commissioner John Edwards confirmed that cookie banner compliance will continue to be a focus for the ICO and that the latter will have to automate the review process, humorously warning, “Our bot is now coming for your bot!”

💡 The topic of Artificial Intelligence stood out, as it inevitably does, with a focus on best practices for accountability & governance, lessons from the GDPR and the use of generative AI.

There were also some interesting views on how the UK should deal with AI: ICO Commissioner John Edwards said that “AI will be dealt with under the UK GDPR”, while Lord Christopher Holmes emphasized the need for proactive legislation on AI (as evidenced by his introduction of the AI Bill), stating that “wait-and-see is not how optimal outcomes come about.”

🏎️Trevor Hughes, CEO of IAPP, drew a memorable analogy saying, “Brakes allowed cars to go faster,” hinting that regulation might actually propel AI advancements rather than hinder them.

🤝 On the topic of transatlantic data transfers, the consensus was that “there will be a Schrems 3.”

As we unpack all the knowledge shared at DPI24, it’s evident that the intersection of data protection and technology is where the future is being shaped.

The key takeaway? Stay informed, stay compliant, and embrace innovation with responsible governance.
