Regulation of Artificial Intelligence Internet and Data Conference 26 September 2023

Yesterday, EDPO attended the RAID 2023 Conference on Regulation of AI, Internet and Data which was held in Brussels.

The conference provided interesting insights into several hot topics, such as the AI Act, consumer protection, data transfers, the digital euro, the DMA, and data protection.

Here are some key takeaways:

– The AI Act was one of the most pressing themes of the day, with an MEP noting that negotiations are expected to be closed by the end of November 2023.

– Regarding the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (DPF), it was stated that there are already 2500 certified companies since the DPF became effective in July 2023. As for the fate of the DPF, the panel was confident that the framework will withstand legal challenge.

– The overlap between AI models and personal data was highlighted, as well as the importance of remembering that personal data in the public domain must still be protected, and that society should not be dismissed amidst the rush to the AI market. Companies should think beyond their products and delve into their potential impact on people and society.

– The conclusion of the « GDPR health check” discussion was that the GDPR, being a principle-based, technologically neutral, flexible tool, it still apt to tackle today’s challenges.
