Data Privacy Brasil
We had the pleasure of attending the Data Privacy Global Conference in São Paulo organised by Data Privacy Brasil, where the discussions were incredibly insightful and inspiring!
The opening ceremony addressed the dangers and opportunities of AI, focusing on its regulation in Brazil. We also gained a valuable African perspective, including a recent data breach case in Nigeria that underscored the critical need to strengthen data protection rights across the global south. Countries like Egypt, South Africa, and Algeria are already making strides by adopting AI and data protection policies, though significant work remains.
A standout example of AI’s potential came from filmmakers using OpenAI’s Sora to create videos from text. One impactful story featured a film about LGBTQ+ issues in Iran, where AI-generated actors were used to protect real individuals from persecution, showcasing AI’s ability to drive creativity while addressing real-world challenges.
Key panels delved into topics such as trustworthy and sustainable AI, managing energy demands, data scraping for AI development, and the need to build accountable digital markets that safeguard human rights. The consensus was clear: responsible AI regulation is essential to balance innovation with ethical and environmental priorities.
It’s exciting to witness these crucial conversations shaping the future of AI and data privacy while observing the different approaches taken outside of the EU.
